Alden was born in Damariscotta and raised in South Bristol. Ann, though not quite a native, moved to Newcastle with her family in 1961. Both attended local schools and each graduated from Lincoln Academy.

After graduating from Husson College in 1970 with a business degree, Alden did a brief stint in the US Army. His first real job started at Harvard Trust Company in Cambridge, MA, beginning a long and successful career in banking. In 1975, First National Bank of Damariscotta offered him an opportunity to move "back to Maine". After 29 years of working for them as branch manager, commercial lending officer and wearing several other banking hats along the way, Alden retired in May 2004 only to begin a new career in real estate.

Ann attended college in New Brunswick, Canada, graduated form the University of Southern Maine in 1979, lived in Boston, MA and Wilder, VT, finally returning to Maine in 1992. Her real estate career began first as a receptionist, later becoming a licensed agent, then co-owning the Coldwell Banker Berton & Associate franchise (from February 1998 to June 2006) and finally creating TEAM McFARLAND with her husband, Alden, in June 2006.

Both Ann & Alden are firm believers in giving back to their communities and have served in numerous capacities over the years. Ann was the President of the Lincoln County Board of REALTORS in 2003, named Lincoln County REALTOR of the year in 2004 and will serve on their Board of Directors through 2007. She is currently serving the 3rd year of a 3-year appointment to the Maine Real Estate Information System Board of Directors and is a member of their Policy Review Committee. She was a member of the Maine Association of REALTORS Strategic Planning Committee in 2004 & 2005. Ann was the President of the Damariscotta-Newcastle Lions Club in 2004/2005, served as a Zone Chair in 2005/2006 and beginning in July 2006, will serve one year as the Vice District Governor of District 41-I. She has served on the Pemaquid Watershed Association and currently is the Secretary for the Board of Directors for Skidompha Library in Damariscotta.

Over the years Alden has served on South Bristol's Planning Board, Budget Committee & Comprehensive Plan; he is currently the South Bristol representative to the Board of Directors of the CLC Ambulance Service. He has also been very active on various organizations' committees including the Gulf of Maine Foundation, Damariscotta YMCA, Waldoboro Lions Club and the Waldoboro Public Library Trustees. Currently Alden is serving on the Lincoln Academy Development Committee, Damariscotta Region Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and is an active member of the Damariscotta-Newcastle Lions Club.

As time permits, the McFarlands enjoy the Maine coast; kayaking, cruising in their power boat "Precious Time" or taking advantage of Alden's life-long hobby of lobster fishing on their lobster boat, "Miss Ann". During the winter they cross-country ski, snow-shoe and traveling to warmer climates in the sunny Caribbean (particularly, St Kitts) where Alden enjoys scuba diving. Spending time with daughters Erica and Alison and their sons-in-law is always a pleasure!
